Case study – spa destination branding – a strategic realignment process of five Bavarian thermal spas.

In: International Journal of Spa and Wellness vol. 5 pg. 308-319

Spa destination branding as a niche within health tourism has been comparatively little addressed in the relevant scientific literature at present. This is a gap in research, the need for positioning on highly competitive national and international health tourism markets is necessary to ensure continued existence and economic success. The COVID-19 crisis intensifies this pressure on destinations and spa operations. Five spa destinations, linked through public ownership structures, launched a joint brand development process. The first phase, under the guidance of leading consulting firm “BrandTrust”, accompanied by experts of Deggendorf Institute of Technology, was completed in 2021. The concept is now being rolled out in the destinations, for which three strategic projects have been defined. In the article, this participatory approach to the development of a tourist brand is presented and analysed. The importance of the orientation on common values through branding is showed on the example of the underlying case which is an ongoing process of development. The authors report there are no competing interests to declare.

Forest, Health and Tourism: Developing sustainable health tourism offers in local forests.

In: 7th International Scientific Conference ToSEE 2023 - Tourism in Southern and Eastern Europe - Conference Proceedings. pg. 385-396

DOI: 10.20867/tosee.07.25

Purpose – Forests are a “polyvalent space” of very broad significance and use. Especially given the ongoing shift towards being a “health space” and their increasing interpretation by society as a location for leisure activities, recreation and experiencing nature, forest-based health tourism activities and offers are springing. It is therefore crucial to take not only the demand side into account, but also those offering these forests: the forest owners. Methodology – Within the framework of a cross-border "INTERREG-V-A Austria-Bavaria 2014-2020" research project on the socially important topic of "Forest, Health and Tourism", an online survey of forest owners (n = 150) in the projects pilot regions of Lower Bavaria and Upper Austria was conducted and evaluated. Findings – Forest has an enormous emotional value for their owners. Indeed, they see the importance of their forests for the population and society, but primarily as a deliverer of “ecosystem services" and not as activity space. There is a basic willingness to make their forests available for health tourism use, but this requires compensation or added value. Contribution – While a forest-related, health tourism product development deals in particular with the demand side, addressing specific target groups with concrete offers, the supply side is often neglected. The survey makes clear that forest owners, despite the common right of free access to forests, must always be seriously and actively involved in product development and implementation of forest-based health tourism offers as key stakeholders in a participatory and transparent manner.

Erholsamer Schlaf durch CO2 – und Temperatursensorik in Schlafräumen (Healthy sleep through CO2 & temperature sensors in bedrooms). Posterpräsentation.

In: Fachtagung DeinHaus 4.0. Niederbayern

Technische Hochschule Deggendorf Deggendorf

  • 26.-27.10.2023 (2023)

The research project "DeinHaus 4.0" at the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at the Deggendorf Institute of Technology is concerned with the question of how to enable elderly and impaired persons to remain in their own houses and apartments for as long as possible. For this aim, an infrastructure was created, which consists of sensors, hardware and software components and has the purpose of colleting progress data with information of the health status and living situation of the test persons over a longer period of time. There is a lack of evidence in older people´s experiences in the use of Smart Home technology. Moreover there is a lack of research on older people´s social relationships.
